Melanie Griffith is opening up about her past struggles with her sobriety and her headline-making plastic surgery.
The 59-year-old star told Porter magazine that she did her best to focus on her children despite her substance abuse issues through the years.
“I was a totally functioning mom. I wasn’t like a drunk-on-the-floor, out-of-it person,” Griffith, said in the new issue, out Friday, according to People magazine. “I didn’t do some things I probably should have done but, mostly, I was there for my kids. They had a sort of privileged gypsy life.”
Griffith first went to rehab in 1988 after admitting she struggled with an alcohol and cocaine addiction. She most recently reentered rehab in 2009.
She has three children: Alexander Bauer, Stella Banderas and “Fifty Shades of Grey” star Dakota Johnson.
Griffith told the magazine of Dakota Johnson’s father, “Don was actually waiting for me when I got out of rehab [the first time]. We got back together; it was the most natural, perfect, loving thing. Then it just sort of wasn’t working. I think it’s hard when you are both in the public eye, unless one of you gives up work.”
