The popularity of cosmetic surgery is at an all time high. The topic could be considered less controversial than it used to be as more people go under the knife.

Since 2008, the amount of rhinoplasty procedures has increased from 3,065 to 4,205 in 2015 according to BAAPS.

What’s the reason behind this? I asked cosmetic surgeon Dr Ian Whitworth from Nuffield Health in Bournemouth about his own experience of the industry.

Unregulated industry

BBC News released an article saying the cosmetic surgery industry is ‘unregulated’, even after the PIP scandal of 2010. Dr Whitworth agreed with this statement.

He said it is still legal to buy fillers on the internet and as long as ‘there is consent’, the person practising the procedure, who may not be qualified for it, is ‘doing nothing wrong’.
