The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) supports the French recommendation that all women who received the faulty Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) breast implants should have them removed or exchanged even in the absence of any signs of rupture. This recommendation also refers to ROFIL Medro Implants, which were manufactured in the Netherlands.
Both types of implants were filled with industrial – not medical — grade silicone, and have a higher than acceptable rupture rate. Between 30,000 to 50,000 women may have these breast implants in Europe, however, they were never cleared for marketing in the US.
According to plastic surgery consultant/aesthetics expert Wendy Lewis, “women who do not have these specific implants should not be affected, but if they have any questions, they should consult their plastic surgeon for guidance,” she wrote in Expert Beauty. “The message to women who know that they have these breast implants or who think they may have these implants is clear from all the relevant medical authorities – have them removed as a precaution.“
What’s more, “this should serve as a warning to any woman considering breast augmentation: make sure you get quality implants from a reputable company that meets all the stringent testing and safety data and stands behind their products with a warranty, such as Mentor Corp. and Allergan, and several others.”
