I have lived a life in which real things have actually gone very wrong. Here I was, having just given myself something I very deeply wanted. So why was I so unhappy?
Thankfully, I live in Los Angeles, so I have friends who have also had cosmetic procedures. I texted two of them, who confirmed that they also were miserable after their surgeries. Why hadn’t they told me? They thought it was just a “them” thing too.
The psychological aspects of cosmetic surgery are poorly understood and terribly ignored. There is always depression after general anesthesia which accompanied by the physicality of the surgical process adds to the dislocation of the body image.
This being well known, why do you ask have not your friends expressed their regrets? Cosmetic Plastic Surgery cannot be truly successful unless the psychological symptoms are also managed. Who wants to admit that they have made the wrong decision regarding the “STYLE “ of the design of the LOOK we might’ve achieved if only in the mind’s eye—what about that vague surgeons’ promise: don’t worry everything will be just “fine.” The last thing surgeons want to do is what they call “hand holding,” but they fail to recognize the need for both the physical and the psychological support that is always needed to get good results to emanate into great results and HAPPY PATIENTS! Not so much to please the eye but more so to lift the spirit of the afflicted (Tagliocozzi 1600’s)
