Regulatory approval allows clinicians to use the biostimulatory filler to treat moderate wrinkles in the chest area.
Health Canada has approved the use of Radiesse, a biostimulatory dermal filler, for the treatment of moderate wrinkles in the décolleté area. The regulatory milestone expands the product’s approved uses in Canada beyond the face and hands.
Radiesse, developed by Merz Aesthetics, is designed to stimulate the body’s natural collagen and elastin production. The new indication follows a multicenter clinical trial that demonstrated significant improvement in the appearance of moderate décolleté wrinkles.
“Despite being one of the most visible areas of our bodies, the décolleté area is often overlooked when it comes to aesthetics,” says Dr Samantha Kerr, chief scientific officer at Merz Aesthetics, in a release. “Radiesse presents a unique solution to improving décolleté wrinkles and provides our customers and their patients a non-surgical, effective option to address aging décolleté skin.”
Dusan Sajic, MD, PhD, a Canadian medical and cosmetic dermatologist, described the chest area as “notoriously difficult to treat” due to its thin skin, high sun exposure, and reduced sebaceous gland activity. Sajic adds that the biostimulatory effects of Radiesse—which “work by triggering collagen, elastin, and micro-vasculature renewal”—offer a clinically supported method to rejuvenate the décolleté.
Radiesse has been available globally since 2005 and is celebrating its 20th year on the market. More than 15 million syringes have been sold worldwide, according to Merz. In Canada, the new approval allows for treatment flexibility, including a 1:2 dilution with sterile saline to tailor procedures based on individual patient needs.
“This new indication for Radiesse to treat the décolleté area marks a significant milestone for the aesthetics market,” says Chris Van Dyk, country manager for Merz Aesthetics Canada, in a release. “It not only expands the versatility of Radiesse but also addresses a growing patient demand for regenerative aesthetic solutions.”
