Data presented at the Science of Skin Summit indicate topical regimens and treatments yield visible improvements in laxity, crepiness, and perceived age among individuals taking GLP-1 therapies.


Targeted skincare regimens used alone or alongside dermabrasion treatments produced statistically significant improvements in skin quality for patients taking medical weight loss medications, according to clinical trial data released by Allergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie company.

The findings, sourced from two single-center clinical studies presented at the Science of Skin Summit in Austin, Texas, evaluated aesthetic approaches in individuals taking medical weight loss drugs, including glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists. According to the company, investigators observed measurable improvements across the face, neck, upper inner arms, and distal thighs.

The topical regimen tested across the trials included a growth factor serum, a neck cream, and a firming and toning body lotion.

Clinical Findings Across Study Arms

In the first trial, a 12-week study involving nine participants who completed the protocol, investigators documented statistically significant visible improvements in dryness, skin tone evenness, crepiness, tactile roughness, lines and wrinkles, and skin texture as early as week two. In participant-reported outcomes, subjects noted that facial skin appeared approximately 10 years younger following four weeks of twice-daily growth factor serum application, the company reports.

The second trial evaluated the topical regimen in combination with DiamondGlow dermabrasion treatments over six weeks in 11 participants who completed at least one post-treatment assessment. According to Allergan Aesthetics, improvements in selected skin quality metrics were noted immediately following the DiamondGlow procedure. Furthermore, participants reported their facial skin looked roughly 7.5 years younger after undergoing three dermabrasion sessions paired with six weeks of topical product use.

Allergan Aesthetics noted that participant satisfaction was high across both cohorts, though specific outcomes varied depending on anatomical treatment area, regimen, time point, and cohort size.

“As medical weight loss therapies continue to transform patient health, there is growing interest in understanding associated changes in skin quality, including firmness, laxity and crepiness,” says Elizabeth Makino, a co-author of both studies and director, clinical development and global scientific affairs, skincare research and development at Allergan Aesthetics, in a release. “These early data contribute clinical evidence evaluating targeted skincare and noninvasive dermabrasion approaches in individuals taking medical weight loss medications. Additional research in larger populations will help further characterize these findings and inform approaches to address patients’ evolving aesthetic needs.”
