Now 93, Mr Saunders has been campaigning for a memorial to the Guinea Pig Club – a group of Second World War servicemen who underwent pioneering plastic surgery.

“I felt it was my duty to take it on,” he said. “It’s very important to me. It was a life work.”

The Guinea Pig Club Monument at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire will be unveiled by the Duke of Edinburgh – the club’s president – on Wednesday afternoon.
