According to a recent report in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, wrinkle fillers containing hyaluronic acid smooth out wrinkles for more than 4 months. Three products containing Hyaluronic Acid have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration in recent years: non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid, hylan B, and hylan B Plus.

“It is generally believed that hyaluronic acid injection fillers are safe and have no occurrence of serious adverse reactions or allergic reactions,” says Sydney Coleman, MD, New York.

Although Coleman writes that the products are safe, he mentions a low incidence of risks, such as temporary discoloration, bruising, and redness at the injection site. He says that some symptoms last more than 10 days, including swelling, redness, darkening of the skin, discoloration, and lumpiness.

Coleman notes that patients should be informed about any risks before they are treating with wrinkle fillers.
