As demand for ethnic rhinoplasty grows, the AAFPRS emphasizes the importance of choosing board-certified facial plastic surgeons with specialized expertise to avoid complications and preserve cultural identity.

The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) is urging patients seeking ethnic rhinoplasty to choose board-certified facial plastic surgeons with specific expertise in the procedure. The announcement comes as patient demand for this type of rhinoplasty increases and concerns rise about the number of revision surgeries being performed.

According to the AAFPRS’s 2024 annual survey, rhinoplasty remains the most commonly requested facial plastic surgery. The survey also found that nearly 80% of AAFPRS members report that more than 10% of their rhinoplasty cases involve revisions of previous procedures.

Ethnic rhinoplasty is distinct from traditional approaches, requiring detailed knowledge of diverse facial structures and sensitivity to cultural identity. The AAFPRS warns that procedures performed without this specialized understanding can lead to complications and the loss of defining ethnic features.

“Ethnic rhinoplasty is about refinement, not erasure. We want to preserve cultural features while enhancing natural beauty,” said Jason Hamilton, MD, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon in Los Angeles and AAFPRS Past Group Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion.

Hamilton emphasized that choosing an underqualified provider can result in both cosmetic and functional issues. Poor outcomes, he noted, often lead to further surgeries and emotional distress for patients.

The AAFPRS reiterated that board certification by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a key credential. Board-certified surgeons complete extensive training, undergo peer review, and are held to high standards of practice. The organization encourages prospective patients to verify their surgeon’s credentials and experience with ethnic rhinoplasty before proceeding with surgery.
