According to a new survey from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), dermatologists performed nearly 10 million medically necessary and cosmetic procedures in 2015.

This number reflects a 5% increase from 2014 and a 27% increase from 2012, as well as an annual increase in skin cancer treatments and the growing popularity of soft-tissue fillers and body sculpting procedures, per a media release from ASDS.

Skin cancer treatments were the most-performed procedures for the fourth year in a row, with ASDS members reporting a total of 3.17 million procedures performed. In addition, melanoma treatment procedures rose 5% from 2014.

ASDS members also performed 6.7 million cosmetic treatments in 2015 โ€“ with the largest year-to-year growth seen in soft-tissue fillers (35%) and body sculpting (11%), according to the release.

Most Popular Cosmetic Treatments in 2015

  • Laser-, light- and energy-based procedures to treat skin conditions (2.62 million)
  • Injectable muscle relaxers to smooth fine lines on the face (1.79 million)
  • Soft tissue fillers to plump skin, lips and depressed scars (1.36 million)
  • Chemical peels designed to reveal smoother skin (596,000)
  • Body-sculpting treatments (230,000)

โ€œASDS members are trained in the latest technologies and best techniques in a wide range of minimally invasive options to provide patients with the first-rate care they deserve and expect,โ€ Naomi Lawrence, ASDS president, says in the release.

โ€œWith the growing popularity of noninvasive cosmetic treatments, this pioneering research can help consumers decide which specialist might be the optimal provider of a certain procedure,โ€ Lawrence adds.
