Canadian plastic surgeons can now offer women an option for breast augmentation with the approval of Sientra, the first new silicone gel breast implant manufacturer to be authorized by Health Canada in nearly 20 years. Distributed by Clarion Medical Technologies, Sientra’s High-Strength Cohesive Silicone Gel Breast Implants feature advanced gel technology, according to company officials.
Julie Khanna, MD, a plastic surgeon at ICLS in Oakville, Ontario, expressed her excitement about the Canadian authorization, stating: “We’ve been waiting a long time for a breast implant that improves the patient experience. Up until now, there have only been two silicone gel implant manufacturers in Canada. Now we finally have another option.”
Sientra’s president and CEO, Ron Menezes, sees Health Canada’s approval as a significant milestone for the company, stating: “We look forward to providing Canadian consumers with the latest generational technology backed by our clinically proven, unrivaled, 10-year safety data, and our industry-leading Platinum20 Warranty Program.”
Sientra is the highest-rated silicone gel breast implant in the United States, where it has been available since FDA approval in 2012, according to Sientra officials. Clinical studies have demonstrated that Sientra breast implants have low complication rates and are designed to perform exceptionally well, they add.
Moreover, Sientra’s High-Strength Cohesive Silicone Gel Breast Implants feature a silicone elastomer shell, which is engineered to minimize rupture. Khanna emphasizes the importance of implant durability, saying, “Sientra has found the right balance. The state-of-the-art bond they have developed between the outer shell and the gel is a big improvement on what’s currently available in Canada. Sientra implants have the lowest rupture rate in the industry.”
