The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) announces that William H. Truswell, MD, FACS, has been installed as President of the organization. He took office on October 28 and will serve the 2017-2018 term year.

Over the past four decades, Dr Truswell has performed over 30,000 procedures. His practice has included major head and neck cancer resection and reconstruction, and facial trauma. Today, his practice focuses on cosmetic facial surgery.

The AAFPRS is the world’s largest specialty association for facial plastic surgery. The organization seeks to educate medical professionals, government and the general public about facial plastic surgery as a specialty that requires intensive training and competence, embodies high ethical standards, artistic ideals, commitment to humanitarian service and a desire to enhance the quality of human life. Members have more comprehensive training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery than any other medical specialty.

“Outgoing president Dr Fred G. Fedok, has been incredibly dedicated to leading the worldwide members of our organization and we are grateful for the time, service and ideas he’s contributed to the Academy,” Truswell says. “My goals for this coming year are to reinforce the AAFPRS code of ethics and continue to educate the public in seeking qualified, trained and experienced facial plastic surgeons for their needs. When we further elevate public trust, it leads to safer, better facial plastic surgery outcomes.”

Dr Fedok welcomes Dr Truswell to the position, stating, “The AAFPRS will be in great hands with Dr Truswell as President. As a member of the Academy for many years, he exudes the passion and qualities that make him a leader. With his extensive experience and knowledge, the AAFPRS will continue to uphold its high ethical standards and be a dependable resource for patients and member surgeons alike.”

Dr Truswell is board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology. He has been a member of the AAFPRS for over 40 years and is a fellow on the FACE TO FACE Committee – the AAFPRS National Domestic Violence Project, and Clinical Instructor in the Division of Otolaryngology at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut.

In addition to running innovative and thriving cosmetic facial surgery practices in Easthampton, Massachusetts, and Seabrook Island, South Carolina, Dr Truswell frequently travels throughout the United States, South America, Asia and Europe to lecture and present on countless panels. Over the past 30 years, he has contributed to or lead more than 170 national and international panels and presentations for facial plastic surgery.

Dr Truswell is formerly the President of Hampshire County Medical Society and the Medical Vice President of the American Cancer Society in Hampshire County. He has written several papers for publication and most recently published his second post-doctoral medical textbook in his specialty, Lasers and Light, Peels and Abrasions-Application and Treatments. His first medical text was Surgical Facial Rejuvenation – A Roadmap to Safe and Reliable Outcomes.

As AAFPRS President, Dr Truswell will closely collaborate with other “core specialties” in the cosmetic surgery field, continue development of AAFPRS’ outstanding educational programs, including online programs, partner with industry on research efforts, and explore avenues to add value to the loyal members of the AAFPRS.
