Global Medical Excellence LLC, which provides insurance services tied to medical tourism, has launched MEDEX, an online virtual exchange where plastic surgeons will place competitive bids to perform procedures.

According to the company, MEDEX will help provide patients seeking plastic surgery in the US a way to identify and select the “best surgeons around,” according to a company spokesperson. Patients create an account on the MEDEX Web site, specifying the type of procedure they are interested in, and then review the offers received from US-based plastic surgeons.

The MEDEX service is more than a Locate-a-Doc type of Web site. The firm offers travel and insurance covering all aspects of medical tourism. According to a company press release, all  MEDEX procedures are performed within the US, with any postoperative care administered locally once the patient has returned home. GME’s affiliated MEDEX doctors are available to answer any follow-up questions patients may have.

MEDEX is claiming patients can get “considerable savings compared to traditional methods of finding a doctor.” On average, patients may expect to “save 30% to 50% of what they might pay elsewhere,” says the company.
